About Us

What is SECOM?

SECOM (South End Community Outreach Ministries) is an independent charitable organization serving Kent County by providing emergency
assistance and opportunities for individual growth and development, and support of the family.

SECOM's Mission

SECOM will actively partner with others working to reduce poverty and increase the ability of individuals to independently meet the basic needs of life. SECOM will strengthen and expand its capacity as a servant leader of community change.

SECOM's Values

Our values are rooted in the Christian faith; we seek to do the work of justice, show mercy and walk humbly with God (c.f. Micah 6:8) following the example and command of Jesus Christ. We believe:

  • that each individual is a unique creation of God, full of potential
  • in the growth of individuals, families and society for the benefit of all
  • in the contribution of all persons
  • that the provision of services are an expression of our faith (James 2) representing integrity, mutual dignity and respect that increases the recognized worth of individuals, communities and society as a whole
  • in practicing good stewardship of the community resources entrusted to us to fulfill our mission

Who does SECOM serve?

Most of our programs are available to any resident of Kent County and participation not dependent upon low income requirements.

SECOM:

offers services and hope to over 8,000 families, children, teens and adults totaling more than 20,000 people annually

distributes nearly 70 tons of food per year

programs have grown by 229% over the past twelve years

Our clients are often:
  • low income residents (income below 150% of federal poverty; $29,025 for family of four in 2005) needing supportive resources
  • recent immigrants
  • single parents with young children
    and seniors and the disabled on fixed incomes with rising living costs
  • individuals seeking better health and lifestyles

What types of programs does SECOM offer?

SECOM offers a variety of programs designed to teach life skills including programs in better personal health, child rearing, family support, and relationship building.

SECOM's program priorities are:

  • reduction of hunger
  • care and support of seniors
  • encouragement and support in development of stable, healthy individuals and families
  • education and mentoring leading to positive developmental environments for children
  • formation and continued growth of a peer environment where each person's contribution is valued

Is SECOM still affiliated with a specific denomination?

Although SECOM originated in 1971 as a shared ministry of four United

Methodist churches and continues to maintain close ties with local United Methodist congregations, SECOM is a nondenominational, faith-based agency. We appreciate support from many different denominations and other non-religious organizations.

How is SECOM funded?

  • 34% foundations
  • 19% United Way
  • 24% congregations
  • 21% individuals
  • 2% miscellaneous and anonymous

SECOM currently receives the support of 25 churches and over 100 volunteers annually. We welcome financial support as well as in-kind gifts such as food for the pantry, furnishings, office supplies, renovation materials, and more.
