English as a Second Language (ESL)
If you have travelled abroad, you know how difficult it can be to find the information you need. Now think about how difficult it would be to live that way. Every time you went to the doctor or to work or to a government agency it would likely be a challenging and stressful event. For many of our neighbors that is how they live.
A recent survey of Burton Heights indicated that nearly 65% of the residents spoke Spanish as their primary language at home. This is the result of so many first generation immigrants moving to Kent County seeking a better life for their families. Just the way our forefathers did.
To smooth the transition into our community SECOM offers ESL classes to help adults in three twelve week classes. Classes cover basic language, vocabulary used in specific situations and better communication through improved grammar.
What better way is there to offer hope to a family than to give them the opportunity to learn.
